What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

5_elements chinese medicineTraditional Chinese medicine (TCM) became an established medical discipline around 2500 years ago. Its fundamental principles, methods of diagnosis and treatment were documented in the book “The Yellow Emperor’s Internal Classic”. Evidence of its practice, however, can be traced back to the New Stone Age (between 4000 – 10,000 years ago)

TCM adopts a unique approach to disease. By taking into account the broader context of the individual’s life, from their physical and emotional state to their lifestyle, the TCM practitioner can draw on a complete picture of their condition. It is the possible to see the deeper pattern of disharmony underlying the specific systems. Treatment aims to correct the underlying disharmony.

Methods of treatment include: herbal medicine taken orally and applied externally, acupuncture/moxibustion, cupping, massage, acupressure-manipulation, surgery and special diets.
